Feline leukemia virus subgroup C receptor 1 (FLVCR1), a member of the SLC49 family of four paralogous genes, is a transmembrane protein. FLVCR1 is a cell surface heme exporter, essential for erythropoiesis and systemic iron homeostasis. Disruption of FLVCR1 function blocks development of erythroid progenitors, likely due to heme toxicity. FLVCR1 has a crucial role in a variety of biological processes, including cell proliferation, cell death, apoptosis, oxidative stress response, cellular differentiation and metabolism. FLVCR1 gene mutation is in association with a clinical syndrome of posterior column ataxia with retinitis pigmentosa (PCARP). FLVCR1 may act as an oncoprotein, and have key roles in promoting proliferation and tumorigenicity of synovial sarcoma (SS), and this may shed new light on finding novel therapeutic strategies against SS
