NES (Nestin) is a Protein Coding gene. Nestin is a member of the class VI family of intermediate filament proteins, originally identified as a marker of neural stem cells and subsequently demonstrated to be expressed in breast cancer (BC) and other cancer types. Nestin is an intermediate filament protein and participates in the cytoskeleton organization. Nestin expression in the endothelium of blood vessels is mainly limited to newly forming vessels, thus being a more specific marker of angiogenesis than the commonly used vascular antigens. It is required for survival, renewal, and mitogen-stimulated proliferation of neural progenitor cells. Nestin is broadly expressed in the heart, fat, and other tissues.
