Description

The mitochondrial Elongation Factor Tu (EF-Tu), encoded by the TUFM gene, is a highly conserved GTPase, which is part of the mitochondrial protein translation machinery. In its activated form, it delivers the aminoacyl-tRNAs to the A site of the mitochondrial ribosome. TUFM, a key factor in the translational expression of mitochondrial DNA, plays an important role in the control of mitochondrial function. TUFM has been reported to be over-expressed in many tumor types including colorectal carcinoma (CRC) by proteomics. Increased expression of TUFM is a promising new prognostic indicator for colorectal carcinoma (CRC). Selective inhibition of TUFM in tumor cells may present a new avenue for the targeted therapy of this cancer. The TUFM is a novel regulator of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and suggests a molecular link between mitochondrial dysfunction and EMT induction
