Description
The solute carrier 44A1 (SLC44A1), also referred to as choline transporter-like protein 1 (CTL1), is a discovered choline transporter with an intermediate affinity for choline; this transport is Na(+)-independent and sensitive to inhibition by the drug hemicholinium-3. SLC44A1 is widely expressed throughout the nervous system in both neurons and oligodendrocytes, while SLC44A2-4 is mainly detected in peripheral tissues. Transporters of the SLC44 family represent attractive and promising targets for therapeutic and applications regarding both immune and degenerative diseases. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)-based positional cloning strategy revealed SLC44A1, a member of the choline transporter-like protein family, and PRKCA, a protein kinase C family member of serine/threonine-specific protein kinases, as the 9q31 and 17q24 breakpoint candidate genes, respectively
