Organic anion transporter 1 (OAT1/SLC22A6) is the member A6 of SLC22 family. Oat1, among the most highly expressed genes in the adult kidney, is localized to the basolateral surface of the proximal tubule; it is also highly expressed in choroid plexus. Oat1 is expressed not only in the developing kidney at around embryonic day 14-15, but also in the fetal and adult brain. The range of Oat1 drug, toxin, and metabolite substrates is now well established by in vitro and in vivo studies.
