BTB(POZ) proteins play a role in cellular functions such as: cytoskeleton regulation, transcription regulation, the gating and assembly of ion channels, and ubiquitination of proteins. BTB/POZ domain is known to be involved in protein-protein interactions. BTBD9 encodes a protein that has two highly conversed domains, the BTB/POZ domain and the BACK domain, which are both associated with transcriptional regulation and protein ubiquitination. BTBD9 is highly expressed throughout the brain and shows variable levels of expression in most other body tissues. In humans, BTBD9 variants are associated with Restless Legs Syndrome and Tourette Syndrome
