Description
Fragile X mental retardation-related protein 1 (FXR1) is a cytoplasmic RNA-binding protein highly conserved among vertebrates. It has been studied for its role in muscle development, inflammation, and tumorigenesis, being related, for example, to metastasizing behavior in human and canine uveal melanoma. FXR1 is a novel COX-2 regulatory factor. FXR1 was highly expressed in human placental villi during early pregnancy. FXR1 is a multifunctional protein involved in translational regulation and stabilization of its mRNA targets in heart muscle, it directly regulates major gap junction components, contributing to proper cell-cell communication in the heart. FXR1-regulated senescence is irreversible and FXR1-depleted cells fail to form colonies to re-enter cellular proliferation. FXR1 expression is a candidate biomarker predictive of poor survival in multiple solid tumors including nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
