Description
RAB38 is a new member of the Rab small G protein family that regulates intracellular vesicle trafficking. Rab38 is highly expressed in alveolar type II cells, melanocytes, and platelets, and it has been shown that a point mutation in the postulated GTP-binding domain of RAB38 is the gene responsible for human Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome. Rab38 is implicated in the biogenesis of melanosomes that help in the synthesis, storage, and transport of melanin pigments. The Rab38 protein is overexpressed at the RNA level in melanoma cancer. RAB38 is also involved in the biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles and defense against certain microbial infections. RAB38 may serve as a novel biomarker and a potential therapeutic target for pancreatic cancer
