keratin KRT6C is a constituent of the cytoskeleton that maintains epidermal integrity and cohesion. Abnormal expression of KRT6C may affect its structural role in the epidermis. Keratins as fibrous proteins, offer structural integrity to various tissues in providing the functional role of protection or load bearing. Keratins consist of central alpha-helical rod domains that are flanked by non-alpha-helical head and tail domains. keratins have evolutionarily conserved and domain-selectively enriched amino acids including glycine and phenylalanine (epidermal), cysteine and proline (hair), and basic and acidic (simple-type epithelial), which reflect unique functions related to structural flexibility, rigidity and solubility, respectively
