Description
The neuropeptide urocortin 2 (UCN2) and its receptor corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor 2 (CRHR2) are highly expressed in skeletal muscle and play a role in regulating energy balance and glucose metabolism. UCN2 is a 38-amino acid peptide of the corticotropin-releasing factor family. Intravenous (IV) delivery of an adeno-associated virus vector serotype 8 encoding Ucn2 (AAV8.Ucn2) increases insulin sensitivity and glucose disposal in mice with insulin resistance. Modified UCN2 peptides may be efficacious in the treatment of type 2 diabetes by acting as an insulin sensitizer in skeletal muscle. UCN2-corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor 2 signaling has favorable effects in the cardiovascular system, including vasodilation, lowering of blood pressure and systemic peripheral resistance, increase in cardiac output and cardiac contractility, as well as cardioprotection against ischemia-reperfusion injury
