Organic anion transporter 3 (OAT3, SLC22A8), a transporter expressed on the basolateral membrane of the proximal tubule, plays a critical role in the renal excretion of organic anions including many therapeutic drugs. The human organic anion transporter, OAT3 (SLC22A8), plays a critical role in renal drug elimination, by mediating the entry of a wide variety of organic anions, including some commonly used pharmaceuticals, into the renal proximal tubular cells. Lansoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, potently inhibits human organic anion transporter, hOAT3 (SLC22A8). Lansoprazole has an asymmetric atom in its structure and is clinically administered as a racemic mixture of (R)-and (S)-enantiomers.
