Description
GNL1, a putative nucleolar GTPase, belongs to the MMR1-HSR1 family of large GTPases that are emerging as crucial coordinators of signaling cascades in different cellular compartments. It encodes 607 amino acids with a molecular mass of 65kDa and contains basic amino acids rich N-terminus, acidic amino acids rich C-terminus and proline rich-domains. GNL1 harbors a novel arginine/lysine-rich nuclear/nucleolar localization signal and localized in different subcellular compartments in cell cycle dependent manner. The presence of GTP binding motifs indicate that GNL1 can acts as molecular switch to control its transition between nucleus and cytoplasm. GNL1 plays a critical role in liver cell proliferation and found to be upregulated in bladder and ovarian cancer and panel of squamous cell carcinoma cell lines
