Description
STPG4 (Sperm-Tail PG-Rich Repeat Containing 4) is located on human chromosome 2p21. The STPG4 protein is restrictedly expressed toward testis. Structurally, the encoded STPG4 protein is reported to be 27807 Da in mass. The STPG4 (also known as GSE; C2orf61) gene is conserved in chimpanzee, dog, mouse, rat, zebrafish, and frog. 167 organisms have orthologs with human gene STPG4. STPG4 is a maternal factor that plays a role in epigenetic chromatin reprogramming during early development of the zygote. STPG4 is involved in the regulation of gametic DNA demethylation by inducing the conversion of the modified genomic base 5-methylcytosine (5mC) into 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC)
