PIWIL2, a member of PIWI/AGO gene family, is expressed in the germline stem cells (GSCs) of testis for gametogenesis but not in adult somatic and stem cells. It has been implicated to play an important role in tumor development. The piwi-like 2 (piwil2) gene is widely expressed in tumors and protects cells from apoptosis induced by a variety of stress stimuli. Piwil2 (mili in mouse or hili in humans), a member of the PIWI/Argonaute gene family, plays important roles in stem cell self-renewal, RNA silencing, and translational regulation in various organisms.Piwil2 was found in germ cells of adult testis, suggesting that this gene functions in spermatogonial stem cell self-renewal
