Description
The microtubule-associated protein 1B (MAP1B) gene serves an important role in axonal growth and brain development. MAP1B binds to microtubules and regulates microtubule dynamics. In addition to regulating the polymerization of microtubule and actin microfilaments, MAP1B also acts as a signaling protein involved in normal physiology and pathological conditions in the nervous system. MAP1B is expressed predominantly during the early stages of development of the nervous system, where it regulates processes such as axonal guidance and elongation. MAP1B expression in the brain persists in adult stages, where it participates in the regulation of the structure and physiology of dendritic spines in glutamatergic synapses. MAP1B mutations are associated with a phenotype including periventricular nodular heterotopia (PVNH), intellectual disability (ID), seizures, and dysmorphic features
