Fast skeletal muscle troponin T (TNNT3) is an important component of the skeletal muscle contractile machinery. In humans, more than 140 different mutations within seven genes (ACTA1, TPM2, TPM3, TNNI2, TNNT1, TNNT3, and NEB) that encode thin filament proteins have been identified. The TNNT3 gene has been previously assigned to 11p15.5 suggesting that TNNI2 and TNNT3 may be closely linked. The precursor mRNA (pre-mRNA) encoding TNNT3 is alternatively spliced, and changes in the pattern of TNNT3 splice form expression are associated with alterations in thin-filament calcium sensitivity and force production during muscle contraction and thereby regulate muscle function. The TNNT3 protein is an important regulatory and structural component of thin filaments in skeletal muscle, which improves meat quality traits of livestock and poultry
