MOAP1 (Modulator Of Apoptosis 1) is a Protein Coding gene. The protein encoded by this gene was identified by its interaction with apoptosis regulator BAX protein. The encoded protein belongs to the PNMA family. This protein contains a Bcl-2 homology 3 (BH3)-like motif, which is required for the association with BAX. MOAP1 is widely expressed in the brain, heart, and other tissues. Enforced miR-1228 expression can reduce MOAP1 expression and delay the progression of stress-induced cell apoptosis. The miR-1228 inhibition of cellular apoptosis is significantly attenuated by repressing MOAP1 expression, suggesting the direct interaction between miR-1228 and MOAP1 protein.
