ST6GALNAC5 (ST6 N-Acetylgalactosaminide Alpha-2, 6-Sialyltransferase 5) is a Protein Coding gene. The ST6GALNAC5 gene, located on 1p31.1, is conserved in chimpanzee, Rhesus monkey, dog, cow, mouse, rat, chicken, zebrafish, and frog. The protein encoded by this gene is a Golgi type II transmembrane glycosyltransferase. The encoded protein catalyzes the transfer of sialic acid to cell surface proteins to modulate cell-cell interactions. The ST6GALNAC5 gene that encodes an alpha2, 6-sialyltransferase involved in the biosynthesis of alpha-series gangliosides, was previously identified as one of the genes that mediate breast cancer metastasis to the brain.
