The solute carrier family 38 (SLC38) is an amino acid transporter family consisting of 11 members termed as SLC38A1-SLC38A11. They are also referred to as sodium-coupled neutral amino acid transporters (SNATs). Members of SLC38 family are membrane transporters found in all cell types. They mediate transport of Na+ -dependent net uptake and efflux of amino acids and play an important role in the Glutamate/GABA-glutamine cycle working between neurons and astrocytes. SLC38 family members play varied roles in metabolism, homeostasis, and neurotransmission. SLC38A11 (Solute Carrier Family 38 Member 11, also known as AVT2) is located on human chromosome 2q24.3.
