Regulation of synthesis and turnover of retinoic acid (RA) is an important mechanism that controls the activity of RA signaling during vertebrate development. ALDH1A2 is a rate-limiting enzyme involved in cellular retinoic acid synthesis. ALDH1 has three main isotypes, ALDH1A1, ALDH1A2, and ALDH1A3, and is a marker of normal tissue stem cells (SC) and cancer stem cells (CSC), where it is involved in self-renewal, differentiation and self-protection. ALDH1A2 is a candidate tumor suppressor in epithelial ovarian cancer. ALDH1A2 suppresses epithelial ovarian cancer cell proliferation and migration by downregulating STAT3.
