OATP1B3, which is encoded by the gene SLCO1B3, is a member of the OATP (organic anion transporting polypeptide) superfamily. SLCO1B3 is a functional transporter normally expressed in the liver, and responsible for transporting a variety of endogenous and exogenous compounds, including hormones and their conjugates as well as some anticancer drugs. SLCO1B3 is an influx transporter located at the hepatocyte basolateral membrane and it is involved in the uptake of a broad range of drug substrates including docetaxel. OATP1B3 expression is limited to the liver in healthy tissues, but the extrahepatic expression of SLCO1B3 has been detected in different cancer cell lines and cancer tissues.
