Description
SYT17 (Synaptotagmin 17) is a Protein Coding gene. The SYT17 gene, located on 16p12.3, is conserved in chimpanzee, Rhesus monkey, dog, cow, mouse, rat, chicken, zebrafish, and frog. Synaptotagmin (Syt) proteins comprise a 17-member family, many of which trigger exocytosis in response to calcium. SYT17 is widely expressed in the brain, prostate, and other tissues, and plays a role in dendrite formation by melanocytes. The function of SYT17 appears to be one mechanism by which neurons have specialized their secretory and endosomal systems to support the demands of synaptic communication over sprawling neurite arbors. 204 organisms have orthologs with the human gene SYT17
