The NF-kappaB/Rel transcription factors are present in the cytosol in an inactive state, complexed with the inhibitory IkappaB proteins. Most agents that activate NF-kappaB do so through a common pathway based on phosphorylation-induced, proteasome-mediated degradation of IkappaB
