The serine-threonine kinase Akt, also known as protein kinase B (PKB), is an important effector for phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase signaling, initiated by numerous growth factors and hormones. Three mammalian isoforms (Akt1/PKBa, Akt2/PKBb, and Akt3/PKBg) have been cloned. Akt2 and Akt3 have 81% and 83% homology in aa sequences with Akt1, respectively. Numerous studies have revealed that the expression pattern of Akt1 and Akt2 is ubiquitous, whereas Akt3 is expressed predominantly in the brain, heart, and kidneys.
