Neuraminidase

Neuraminidase, also known as sialidase, is a glycoside hydrolase enzyme that cleaves terminal sialic acid residues from glycoproteins and oligosaccharides. Neuraminidase is produced by pathogens such as bacteria, parasites and viruses and is believed to modify the host’s response to infection. Viral neuraminidase is well characterized, especially in the influenza virus and is a therapeutic target for preventing the spread of the virus. The influenza neuraminidase can be found on the surface of the virus, and comprises a single polypeptide chain with a hydrophobic region embedded in the viral membrane. Mammalian neuraminidase homologues include NEU1, NEU2, NEU3 and NEU4. Recombinant human neuraminidases can be produced in E. coli.
