Ribonuclease T2, also known as RNase T2, is the only member of Rh/T2/S family of acidic hydrolases in humans. It is an endoribonuclease that plays a role in innate immunity. It catalyzes the cleavage of single-stranded RNA molecules between purine and uridine residues, which contributes to the supply of catabolic uridine and the generation of purine-2',3'-cyclophosphate-terminated oligoribonucleotides. This degradation of RNAs from microbial pathogens leads to a subsequent detection by Toll-Like Receptor 8 (TLR8), which results in an immune response. RNase T2 also plays a role in mitochondrial RNA degradation and processing. Recombinant RNase T2 derived from E. coli that contain tags are available.
