Formic acid is the simplest organic acid, with the chemical formula HCOOH. Also known as methanoic acid, it is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. It is miscible in water and most polar organic solvents. Formic acid is an additive in analytical separation methods such as reverse phase HPLC and LC-MS for separating peptides, proteins, and even viruses.
