Ampicillin

Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, and therefore can be used to inhibit the growth of both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. It is semi-synthetic and belongs to the beta-lactam penicillin group of antibiotics. Ampicillin acts by interfering with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, through attachment to penicillin-binding proteins (PBP). This inhibits the synthesis of peptidoglycan, an essential component of the cell wall, weakening the cell and causing lysis. As a pharmaceutical, it is often used in the treatment of a number of bacterial infections. Ampicillin resistance is used as a selectable marker in molecular cloning.
