Sex hormone-binding globulin serves as a transport protein for androgens and may also participate in receptor-mediated activities. Each dimer of this globulin binds a single steroid molecule, specifically targeting 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone, testosterone, and 17-beta-estradiol. It regulates the plasma metabolic clearance rate of steroid hormones by maintaining their concentration levels in the plasma. In rabbits, this globulin is encoded by the SHBG gene. Although there is no direct evidence for the specific function of SHBG in rabbits, it can be hypothesized that its presence in rabbits may be closely related to sex hormone binding, transport, and metabolism, similar to other mammals
