Description

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is a dimeric glycoprotein that can consist of either two A subunits (PDGF-AA), two B subunits (PDGF-BB), or one of each (PDGF-AB). It acts as a powerful mitogen for cells of mesenchymal origin, such as fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, and glial cells. The alpha type binds to PDGF-AA, PDGF-BB and PDGF-AB. The chemotactic effect on rabbit bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells was further enhanced by PDGF-AB when combined with other growth factors such as TGF-β3, BMP-2 and FGF. This synergistic effect suggests that PDGF-AB has an important promotional role in tissue repair and regeneration
