In rabbits, the S100B gene encodes Protein S100-B, a small protein that binds both zinc and calcium. This protein is highly expressed in astrocytes and is one of the most abundant soluble proteins in the brain. It exhibits a strong affinity for zinc and a weaker affinity for calcium, with distinct binding sites for each ion on its monomers. S100B is used as a marker of glial cell injury in a rabbit model of Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis, further suggesting its potential role in central nervous system disease.
