Hydroxyproline (HYP) is an amino acid prevalent in animals, primarily associated with collagen synthesis and tissue fibrosis. As a vital component of collagen, hydroxyproline is formed from proline through hydroxylation and plays a crucial role in maintaining tissue elasticity, particularly in the development of skin, bones, and connective tissue. For instance, in a mouse model of pulmonary fibrosis, a significant increase in hydroxyproline content indicates collagen accumulation and heightened tissue fibrosis. Additionally, hydroxyproline levels serve as a biomarker for assessing tissue fibrosis states, being closely linked to the pathological conditions of liver and pulmonary fibrosis.
