Description

The carboxylated form of osteocalcin is a principal organic component of the bone matrix, making up 1-2% of total bone protein. It functions as a negative regulator of bone formation, helping to limit bone formation without affecting bone resorption or mineralization. This form binds strongly to apatite and calcium. Conversely, the uncarboxylated form acts as a hormone secreted by osteoblasts, regulating various cellular processes, including energy metabolism, male fertility, and brain development. In rabbits, the BGLAP gene encodes osteocalcin
