Beta amyloid is a 40–43 amino acid peptide cleaved from amyloid precursor protein by a protease, gamma-secretase. Beta Amyloid (1-40) (Amyloid beta 40 or Abeta 40) together with beta Amyloid (1-42) (Amyloid beta 42 or Abeta 42) are two major C-terminal variants of the amyloid beta protein, constituting the majority of amyloid beta proteins.
