Since the alkaline phosphatase is a stem cell membrane marker, the elevated expression of this protein is a demonstration of undifferentiated, pluripotent state. AP is a hydrolase enzyme responsible for dephosphorylating molecules such as nucleotides, proteins, and alkaloids under alkaline conditions.
