An active metabolite of tryptophan and an NMDA receptor agonist; induces lipid peroxidation in rat brain synaptosomes, an effect that can be reversed by 2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric acid; decreases the viability of primary rat neurons at 25 µM; induces convulsions in mice at 1 µg/animal, i.c.v.; increased plasma levels of quinolinic acid negatively correlate with BNA scores in patients with schizophrenia
