A neutral polyene with antifungal activity; inhibits cell growth as well as mitochondrial terminal electron transport in S. cerevisiae at 135 µg/ml; binds to various sterols in aqueous solutions and fungal cell membranes at 50 µg/ml; induces membrane pit formation and leakage of cell contents; has been used to label sterols within biological structures for imaging; ex/em = 338/480 nm, respectively
