Description
Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine secreted by many different cell types which acts upon a wide range of target cells, resulting in a diverse range of effects. The biological properties of IL-1 include the induction of B cell proliferation, stimulation of T cell proliferation in conjunction with IL-2 and the production of collagenase and prostaglandin by fibroblasts. IL-1 is also responsible for triggering the acute-phase response in the liver, and is involved in both cytokine network and vascular endothelium activation.
