Prolactin is an integral member of the immunoneuroendocronology network and appears to have a role in pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases (Ref: DOI: 10.1007/s12016-009-8185-3).
During pregnancy, high circulating concentrations of estrogen and progesterone inhibit the action of prolactin on milk production. Following delivery, reduced estrogen and progesterone production allows prolactin to induce lactation. Prolactin is a hormone released by the pituitary gland that stimulates breast development and milk production in women. There is no known normal function of prolactin in men.
