ureA (also known as hpuA) is a gene encoding a protein named urease subunit alpha (ureA) in Helicobacter pylori. The protein encoded by this gene is also known as urea amidohydrolase subunit alpha and belongs to urease gamma subunit family and urease beta subunit family. Its orthologous protein is known as the gamma/beta subunit (UreAB) in most other bacteria. This protein plays an important role in urea catabolic process
