In its secreted form, the FSTL3 protein acts as a binder and antagonist to TGF-β family members, inhibiting cell signaling induced by activin A, activin B, BMP2, and MSTN. It plays a role in bone formation, inhibition of osteoclast differentiation, hematopoiesis, and enhanced hematopoietic progenitor cell adhesion.
