PIGR proteins play a critical role in mediating the selective transcytosis of polymerized IgA and IgM across mucosal epithelial cells, which is critical for mucosal immunity. PIGR binds these immunoglobulins at the basolateral surface, forming a complex that is transported intracellularly and secreted apically.
