PDCD8/AIFM1 protein has the dual functions of NADH oxidoreductase and apoptosis regulator, and translocates from the mitochondrial intermembrane space to the cytoplasm and nucleus in response to apoptotic stimuli. It acts through a caspase-independent pathway, inducing “parthanatos” characterized by fragmentation of chromosomal DNA.
