It has been mentioned that SPGP plays a role in cholesterol metabolism and homeostasis and fatty acid metabolism, among other functions. Structurally, the ABCB11 protein is described to be 1321 amino acid residues in length and 146.4 kilodaltons in mass. It is localized to the cell membrane of the cell. In terms of tissue specificity, it is noted to be expressed predominantly, if not exclusively in the liver, where it was further localized to the canalicular microvilli and to subcanalicular vesicles of the hepatocytes by in situ.
