Functionally, this protein is known to be involved in transcriptional activation and repression of select genes by chromatin remodeling (alteration of DNA-nucleosome topology). The canonical protein structure is reported to have an amino acid length of 1590 residues, a mass of 181.3 kDa, and is a member of the SNF2/RAD54 helicase protein family. It is known to be localized in the nucleus. As many as 2 protein isoforms have been reported. The protein has been noted to be post-translationally ubiquitinated and cleaved. The SMARCA2 gene has been associated with the disease, Nicolaides-Baraitser syndrome. Other alias names for this target include BAF190 and BIS.
