Functionally, this protein is known to catalyze the first step in ubiquitin conjugation to mark cellular proteins for degradation through the ubiquitin-proteasome system. The canonical protein structure is reported to have an amino acid length of 1058 residues, a mass of 117.8 kDa, and is a member of the Ubiquitin-activating E1 protein family. It is known to be localized in the nucleus, mitochondria, and cytoplasm and is notably expressed in erythrocytes. The UBA1 gene has been associated with the disease, Spinal muscular atrophy X-linked.
