SPAK is an alias of the human STK39 gene, which encodes the protein, serine/threonine kinase 39. Notably, SPAK is known to play a role in inflammatory response pathways and intracellular signal transduction, among other functions. The STK39 protein is 545 amino acid residues in length and 59.5 kilodaltons in mass. However, as many as 2 protein isoforms have been identified. It is localized to the nucleus and cytoplasm of the cell. In terms of tissue specificity, it is reported to be highly expressed in the brain and pancreas followed by heart, lung, kidney, skeletal muscle, liver, placenta and testis.
