HIV glycoprotein 41 (gp41) is a transmembrane envelope protein expressed on the surface of HIV. First translated from the env gene as gp160, the ~345 amino acid gp41 is cleaved by the protease furin and then glycosylated. Once the virion recognizes CD4+ host cells (T cells and macrophages), gp41 connects with the host membrane to facilitate fusion.
