I study cell walls in the context of bacterial growth and the associated enzymes. For in vitro biochemical assays, I extract cell walls as substrates from bacteria and purify enzymes. The process of isolating cell walls involves using a high concentration of SDS for cell lysis and the chemical disruption of enzyme activity. Subsequently, excess SDS must be removed to obtain purified cell walls. This basic vortex mixer proves to be incredibly useful for effectively mixing samples, facilitating the dissolution of cell wall pellets, and assisting in removing SDS during cell wall purification.
To isolate cell walls of bacteria.
Use hot water and then vortex for faster removal of SDS.
