Our lab does quite a bit of cloning and thus do a lot of DNA preps. We generally use the Zippy kit for E. coli and it works wonderfully. In as little as 10 minutes, a single column can yield 30 uL of DNA with concentrations between 150-250ng/uL. The kit is very straight foward and easy to use. The instructions say to use 600 uL of an overnight culture but I have used as much as 5 mL (to increase DNA yield) with no problems. It is also more cost effective than the Qiagen or Progmega kits.
Plasmid DNA prep
Overnight culture (or resuspend cells from a plate in 600 uL of water)
Add 100 uL of cell lysis buffer to 600 uL of overnight culture (or cell suspension). Upon cell lysis (sample will turn clear), add 350 uL of cold neutralization buffer. Invert to mix, sample is neutralized when blue color is gone. Spin and transfer supernatant to column. Spin. Wash column with 200 uL of Endo wash buffer. Spin. Wash with 400 uL of Zippy wash buffer. Spin. Elute in water (or TE buffer).
Spin several mL's of overnight culture down and resuspend in 600 uL of water. This will increase DNA yield and does not overwhelm column.
